cost of procrastination

What is the cost of procrastination?

Really, we all procrastinate. And sometimes it’s okay to take some time off (and not be productive!). But what is the cost of procrastination when it becomes a regular habit?

The True Cost of Procrastination

Procrastination is the act of delaying a task, usually because you dislike or dread it. or because you don’t feel qualified. It may involve avoiding a task you know you should do even though no external factors prevent you from doing the job. In other words, it’s the act of delaying something that needs to be done in favor of checking your Facebook feed or playing a round of “Candy Crush.” Procrastination may also look like cleaning house instead of studying. Anything you do to put off what you should be doing is procrastination.

What is the cost of procrastination?

The cost of procrastination is immense. People who procrastinate may be less productive, have higher stress levels, are likely to get sick, are less creative, and fail to achieve their goals. In addition, procrastination has been linked with depression. Procrastination literally robs you of joy.

Additionally, a procrastinator’s cost is more than just the lost time and money. Living this way makes you feel bad about yourself and your abilities. When you avoid responsibilities for an extended period, it can lead to self-loathing and guilt. If you want to reduce and stop procrastinating, use the following five steps to help you get started.

Step #1: Identify the Behavior to help identify your personal cost of procrastination

The first step is identifying the behavior in yourself. For example, after you’ve decided that you want to stop delaying your responsibilities, it’s time to determine when and where you do it.

Step #2: Decide What Needs to Be Done

Decide when to start the tasks, instead of putting it off until later. To determine what needs to be done, list your goals, as well as the steps involved in attaining your goals, include deadlines for those goals, and the cost of not completing them.

Step #3: Schedule and Remind Yourself

Get everything you want to do and need to do prioritized into your schedule. Also, set a reminder on your phone to not let you forget about that start time. Finally, when you schedule your time, think about the setup and tear down of the actions you’re taking so you allow for enough time.

Step #4: Commit to Success

Your level of commitment determines your level of success, in most cases. Commit to your success by being dedicated to your goals, doing what it takes to reach and achieve success. You also need to put in the hard work, wake up early, stay later, make the tough decisions, and most of all, don’t give up when things go wrong. Find a solution and keep going until you succeed. When you are committed to succeed, you will do whatever it takes to get to the next step. When you are not committed, you will do what is convenient.

Step #5: Reward Yourself

When the time comes, incentivize the job with a small reward for getting started or finishing on time, instead of procrastinating. Create a habit of doing difficult tasks first. When you do this, you don’t feel as if the task is hanging over your head. Rewarding the behavior that you want to achieve by triggering your pleasure center gives you a good reason to eliminate procrastination and reduce the cost of procrastination.

Expectations vs. Reality – Is the Stress Impacting Your Life?

How often have you felt stressed because something didn’t go the way you expected it to? It’s probably happened more than once. One of the greatest expectations that people share is that life should follow a particular course. However, the expectations set are sometimes unrealistic and can cause a great deal of stress.

When you have unrealistic expectations, you want to see the results you hope for rather than the results that are often before you. But life doesn’t always give you what you expectation. Plans go awry. When this happens, you may feel disappointed, sad, or even depressed because the expectations that initially seemed so real at first were never fulfilled.

To avoid the anxiety and stress of unmet expectations, learn how to take life as it comes and live in the here and now. Of course, you can’t control what will happen tomorrow or next week, so instead of thinking about the expectations you have for your future, focus on living today.

High expectations are not always negative; in fact, they may help you achieve your goals and encourage you to reach new heights. However, expectations that you can’t fulfill can cause a lot of stress in your life and prevent you from living in the moment.

If you want to avoid this stress in your life, you need to learn how to let go of unrealistic expectations and view things as they are, not as you want to see them. Here are some valuable tips on how to deal with expectations versus reality.

1. Keep expectations realistic

You must not have expectations that are too high or impossible to fulfill. If you have unrealistic expectations, it means it’s impossible to meet and will only lead to disappointment and stress. Without these expectations, you won’t have any disappointments when they aren’t reached – hence there will be no stress.

2. Let unrealistic expectations go, and set yourself up to reduce the cost of procrastination

Learn to recognize unrealistic expectations. When these expectations aren’t realistically achievable, you must let them go. However, you can change your expectations by incorporating realistic objectives, methods, and goals, which are achievable and within your grasp. In other words, keep it real.

3. Remember the positive aspects of life

Instead of focusing only on your expectations for life, it’s important that you focus on the positive aspects of life that you experience each day. You don’t need expectations to enjoy life; however, you do need gratitude to enjoy your life to its fullest. Just make it a point to see and accept things as they are. Remember there are positives and negatives to everything.

4. Get a New Perspective

It’s beneficial to share your expectations with someone else. They may understand the expectations better and are able to help you identify whether they’re realistic or not. Share your expectations with someone you trust and who is knowledgeable about the topic. If the person has a different perspective that person may be able to help you adjust or improve your expectations.

Whether it’s expectations at work, in your career, or expectations of yourself, learn how to manage them without letting them cause stress and anxiety. Remember that expectations can sometimes lead to disappointments, and it’s vital that you know how to deal with them in a positive and stress-free way.

Scheduling Methods for More Productivity

It may be helpful to think of time like money; if you spend time on things that are not important or useful, it’s just like spending money on things that you don’t want or need. However, unlike cash, you will never get more time.

cost of procrastination

Sound time management methods can help you become more productive. These methods may include enabling you to plan your time more wisely. This, in turn, helps you keep track of how much time is available per task, what needs to be accomplished, and what needs to be completed by a specific time.

From this perspective, scheduling is considered a form of time management because it allocates specific time slots for specific tasks, instead of generalizing a block of time. To schedule your day for maximum productivity, follow the suggestions below:

Define Your Why

First, define your purpose for the time you want to schedule. For example, is it so you can complete a project by a specific date? Is it so you can do laundry every other day instead of once per week? Defining why you are scheduling time will keep you focused on how important it is to be productive and avoid distractions.

Set Goals

Set specific goals and time limits for each task. Start by writing down all major tasks that need to be completed. Then determine how much time you need for each task, based on what needs to be done. Consider how long it takes to complete in an average situation. Next, break up your time into 30-minute blocks of time.

Schedule Everything

Make Adjustments

Schedule your time accordingly, so you can complete each task with time left over to take breaks and related activities. If you want to be extra productive, take an incremental approach by creating a daily schedule and using time blocks to ensure that you allow enough time to complete your morning routine.

If time was allotted for a task, but you find it’s not working out for you, make adjustments to your schedule until it aligns with the daily schedule needs. If the desired plan cannot be achieved, tasks will need to be prioritized. Consider using the Eisenhower Method to prioritize your schedule.

Efficient scheduling ensures you can complete your most important tasks each day. In addition, it keeps you on track by ensuring you’ve planned enough time and didn’t over-schedule per task. As you use the schedule, you learn what you can be outsource, automate, or delete from your schedule entirely, since it has no impact on your tracking.

mindfulness for productivity

Mindfulness for Productivity

How is it possible that the holidays are almost upon us? While the to-do list grows exponentially, sometimes our productivity can diminish. But instead of letting the list overwhelm you, focusing on mindfulness for productivity can actually help. Not only can your productivity improve, but with a focus on mindfulness, your enjoyment of the holidays can also come back.

How to Stay Happy With Mindfulness for Productivity

Often times, a person will become frustrated with a project that seems to be going
nowhere. They are fearful that if they stop the project, they will lose all of the effort and
energy that was put into it. This is not an efficient way to get things done. If the person
would step back, take some deep breaths, and consider the end product, it would help
the project reach fruition. This is using mindfulness to help fulfill a task. Mindfulness is
simply being aware of what is going on around you and putting oneself in the present
moment in order to focus and get things accomplished.

Understanding Mindfulness

Mindfulness is the component that helps a person be more efficient, and more
productive. It consists of making the best possible decisions, and being able to think
rationally. It also is the process of being creative, and positive engagement with other
employees. All of this has an impact on task completion and the efficiency of the work
involved. Mindfulness also helps to increase the person’s mood by helping to get rid of
negative thoughts, and replacing those with a more pleasing thought pattern. The mood
during a task is very important as it can lead to the success of failure of a project.
Always being mindful and aware of how things are perceived in the moment will ensure
happiness and productivity.

Benefits of Meditation

Meditation is a good form of relaxation, and the perfect setting for mindfulness. This
helps with the promotion of creativity, and to improve cognitive thinking. Basing
productivity on these two elements are exactly what mindfulness produces. By using
mindfulness practices regularly will greatly enhance decision making skills, and the
production of new and better ideas. People will begin to be more confident in
themselves, and make sound investments in the future of a business or entity that they
are focused on. Meditation is an effective and powerful tool for mindfulness because of
better, more positive creativity. It can change the way a person thinks, and how they
experience certain events.

Mindfulness, when practiced by leaders, can make for a more productive workplace. It
will improve employer and employee relationships which will increase business
revenue. Mindfulness will enable a person to single task, which is the opposite of multi-
task. They will concentrate and focus on doing one thing to perfection before starting on
another. Mindfulness allows the mind, sensations, and feelings to flow so that many
things can be observed before becoming assigned to anyone.

3 Quick Hacks to Help with Mindfulness for Productivity

There is some confusion regarding mindfulness and productivity. A lot of people see the two as polar opposites. But the truth is that there is no conflict between mindfulness and productivity. The two can certainly go hand-in-hand. Below are three quick ways that mindfulness can improve your productivity and help you achieve a greater sense of balance as well as achievement.

  1. First, Stop Working

There are a lot of people working themselves to the bone, yet they aren’t as productive as they’d like. In many cases, they are simply distracted. Mindfulness is the cure for distraction. Learning to focus on where you are and what you are doing is key. Many busy people never really get a chance to rest because they are always thinking about work when they are supposed to be resting, and vice versa.

Leave your work at the office when you head home . You can’t be at your best tomorrow if you don’t allow your mind and body to rest today. Take some time to just be where you are.

When it’s your day off, focus on your family. Give them your attention and not just your physical presence. Enjoy time with your friends. Throw yourself into your chores, your home projects and your hobbies. Then, when Monday rolls back around, you’ll have a lot more energy and ability to concentrate on the tasks at hand.

  1. Ditch Multitasking for Deep Dives

Multitasking is often a mindfulness killer. You’re barely aware of what you’re doing because your mind is juggling half a dozen other projects. This isn’t the path to productivity. A better approach is to go all in on a single task. If you could only accomplish one task today at work, what would it be? Once you are aware of your highest priority for the day, set yourself to work on that task. Close the door, shut off your phone and take a deep breath. Then dive down into that work and
don’t come back up for air until it is complete.

  1. Use Technology to Improve Awareness

This one might sound a little out of place, but technology can actually help increase your mindfulness. In the same way that a meditation teacher at a retreat might ring a bell on occasion to draw your attention and focus, you can use phone apps or even just a simple alarm to help you find your center every hour. You can even use custom wallpapers for your phone and computer desktop that act as visual cues to bring your attention back to the moment.

How to Live More Intentionally for Better Productivity

It’s all too easy to drift mindlessly through the day. Between external pressures and constant distractions, many of us never pause to reconsider how we spend our time. But even if living intentionally doesn’t come naturally to you, it’s well worth the effort to make it a habit. Here’s why. Living intentionally means consciously deciding what to do with your time. It’s easy to get trapped in a constant cycle of reacting to outside events, but living this way can leave you feeling frustrated, unfulfilled, and unproductive. Living intentionally lets you take back control over your time and
attention.

It’s not easy to stay productive when you’re feeling distracted, harried, or anxious. But when you practice living with intention, your focus stays intact, no matter how busy you are. Choosing what to do with each hour helps you feel less stressed while making the most of your time at work and at home.

1.Take Time to Center Yourself Regularly

If you notice that you’re feeling scattered or frazzled, stop what you’re doing for a second. Take a few deep breaths and turn your attention to the present moment. Ask yourself, “What do I need to be focusing on right now?” Give that one thing all of your attention, keeping your mind in the present.

    2.Focus on Your Health

Your health makes a big impact on your overall well-being and productivity, so make a conscious decision to prioritize it. Eat well, get enough sleep, and get some exercise every day. Even small lifestyle changes can make a difference in your mood and energy levels.

      3.Rethink Your Habits

Do you spend a lot of time on Netflix, social media, or video games? Most of us have some mindless habits that can eat up a lot of time. In moderation, it’s okay to enjoy these activities. But if you aren’t happy with how much time you lose to these mindless habits, it might be time to cut back. Decide how much time you’re willing to spend on these activities every day, and set a timer to remind yourself when it’s time to stop.

        4.Allocate Your Time Wisely

We all get twenty-four hours every day, but if you use your time well, it can feel like much more. Take a few minutes every morning to decide what you want to accomplish and when. Making a to-do list can help keep you on track. This simple tip can increase your everyday productivity dramatically.

If you want to make the most of your time, living intentionally is a must. Make a habit of being intentional with your time and attention, and you’ll become happier, more productive, and more mindful.

          Productivity Guilt

Do you know what I mean by productivity guilt? Productivity guilt occurs when someone feels guilty about not being productive all the time, when they become obsessed with working to the exclusion of other things in their lives and feel guilty about resting or having fun with their families.

I know it seems counterintuitive to talk about this, since I talk so frequently about productivity in general. But I certainly don’t ever mean to put productivity over self care and family.

          Productivity Guilt Is Not Benign

Toxic productivity. Burnout. These are modern names for this modern phenomenon. To be fair, workaholics have always existed and they have always experienced burnout, but never before has there been an epidemic where so many have become obsessed with productivity to the point of hurting themselves.

          Productivity guilt

This phenomenon started with middle management in large corporations in the 1970s, spread to technology start-ups in the late 1990s, and seeped into the mainstream culture after the turn of the century. Companies see no problem with productivity guilt and many see it as a good thing.

          All of them are wrong.

Normal? No. Widespread? Yes? Healthy? Absolutely not. This trend may benefit corporate tills but it hurts workers. There is more to life than work and focusing on productivity hurts people both mentally and physically. It also hurts their families, friends, and communities.

The mental health impacts of productivity guilt include anxiety and depression. It can also lead to self-esteem and self-confidence issues. Physically, productivity guilt can cause trouble sleeping, increase blood pressure and blood sugar, result in weight gain, and cause a host of stress-related illnesses. That is right -this is a form of stress and produces all the problems that come with being overstressed.

Productivity guilt also results in relationship issues. It can end marriages and friendships. It strains relationships with family and other loved ones. Children especially suffer from it when their parent chooses to spend unnecessary time working instead of spending time with them.

Communities can also suffer when people put more of themselves into work because that is less time they have to do other things in life. Participation in community groups, religious groups, and non-profits has declined precipitously with the increase in workaholism. You cannot referee a soccer game, feed the hungry, or usher at church when you work too much.

Yet cutting back on work makes one feel guilty. This is productivity guilt, and it causes all of the negative consequences just discussed. It is a real and growing trend across America and much of the world. But is it benign? Not all. The rest of the articles in this series are devoted to helping you move past productivity guilt and hustle less, guilt free.

          When Is Productivity Guilt Justified?

The foremost objection to ending productivity guilt is the claim that sometimes it is a good thing and that we should not foster irresponsibility. This is a ridiculous claim. Sure, productivity guilt can be justified sometimes but that is not the subject of this series and the average person can tell the difference between the two.

What causes guilt? The feeling that we either did something we should not have or did not do something that we needed to do. Guilt is a natural part of human psychology and can be incredibly helpful when it is appropriate.

This is because feeling guilty causes psychological distress and motivates us to take steps to relieve that distress. This means that we are likely to make amends for something we did that was wrong or try to make up for something we did not do. We are also likely to take steps to avoid repeating the mistake because we do not like feeling guilty.

Guilt is healthy in such cases. What makes the difference between healthy and pathological guilt when it comes to productivity? When it is justified. Productivity guilt is only something that one should feel when actually being lazy and irresponsible. If someone is goofing off and ignoring their responsibilities, the guilt is justified.

Pathological productivity guilt occurs even when someone is meeting their expectations and fulfilling their responsibilities, or when they are incapable of doing so but still feel pressured to do so anyway. The latter occurs often with illness or injury.

When someone is working hard, doing their job, and trying their best, they have nothing to feel guilty about, even if there is still work undone at the end of the day/week/month. Feeling guilty in this circumstance is not healthy but is just as, or even more, likely to produce a response of working more to ease the guilt.

Answering a set of quick questions can help determine if productivity guilt is justified. Do this whenever you feel guilty. Did you show up? Did you do your best? Did you try to get the job done? Did you work hard to meet your responsibilities?

If the answers to these questions are yes, or you have an extenuating reason for saying no, then productivity guilt is not warranted, and it is pathological. You can let it go and move on with a clear mind. If you have trouble doing so, use the techniques in the rest of this series to help you.

          One final note

Don’t get me wrong – there is still purpose to productivity, and certain unproductive habits that still need to be broken. But productivity needs to be in balance with all the other aspects of life.

          your WHY statement

Are you ready to create your WHY statement?

Most people do not know what their true calling in life is. Some people just don’t care about this and are happy to be a drifter in life and just “go with the flow”. Others do care about it but have problems with identifying their real purpose in life. So what do you need? You need a WHY statement!

Let’s look at the reasons why you need a WHY statement, how to get the best results from your WHY statement, how to get the most from your WHY statement, how to find your WHY, and how to write a good one. Plus why your business needs a WHY statement and how to create a strong one!

6 Reasons Why You Need a WHY Statement

          1. It will provide clarity about what your purpose in life is.
            * If you don’t know your true life’s purpose then you will end up doing things that you really don’t want to do. There are so many people working jobs that they hate just to pay the bills. They dread Monday mornings and always feel apprehensive on Sunday nights. This is no way to live your life.
            * When you know what your true purpose is in life you can take action to achieve this. You will have more confidence and can get a job that will align with your purpose. You will have more energy and be motivated every day.
          2. A WHY Statement Sharpens your Focus
            * Without the right focus in your life it is easy to set goals that you are not truly committed to. A lot of people follow their friends and other influencers in their life and end up setting the same goals as them. We are all different and this rarely works out well.
            * When you identify what you really want your life to be about this clarity helps you to work out your next moves a lot more easily. You can use your WHY statement to drive you forward each day and achieve what you really want from your life.
          3. You will make the Right Decisions
            * Have you ever made wrong decisions in your life? Of course you have we have all done that. When you have a strong and compelling WHY statement it will help you to make much better decisions in life.
            * A lot of decisions have serious consequences and if you don’t know your true purpose then you can dismiss these consequences in exchange for short term pleasure or gain. With a good WHY statement you will assess the long term consequences and be able to make better decisions.
          4. It Provides more Accountability
            * People that have no purpose in life tend to shy away from accountability. They are just happy to drift along but then complain bitterly when things go against them. It is never their fault of course and always someone else’s.
            * With a powerful WHY statement you will know where you are going in life and be accountable for this. You will think things through more and only take action where it aligns with your WHY statement. This additional accountability will make you a better person.
          5. You will be Healthier and Happier
            * If you only want to consider one of these reasons to have a compelling WHY statement then this is the one to choose. There is nothing more important than your health and your happiness. When you are happy then you tend to be healthier. If you are unhappy then your resistance is down and you can experience all kinds of health issues.
          6. Your Resilience will Increase
            * Everyone has to face problems in their life. For some people these problems are too difficult to handle and they become overwhelmed and stressed out. When you have a compelling WHY statement you can see these problems as opportunities for you to grow and attain fulfillment in your life.

Getting the Best Results From Your WHY Statement

It is no easy task to identify your real purpose in life and write a compelling WHY statement that will drive you forward. In reality this is going to take a lot of time and effort to get it right. So when you make this kind of investment in your WHY statement you want to make sure that you get the most out of it afterwards.

In this article we will explain how you can do that. As soon as you have your WHY statement written you can start to do these things which will help to transform your life for the better. Don’t just write your WHY statement and then not take any action and follow through on it. If you don’t take action then there is no point writing your WHY statement.

Use your WHY Statement to set inspiring goals

Only a small percentage of the population actually set goals. Some of these people choose to do this at New Year when they are in a drunken haze. We do not recommend this as it rarely works out well. Others will set goals with a clear head but they end up going for goals that they are not totally committed to and then fail to achieve them.

You may be wondering why anyone would set themselves goals that they are not really committed to. Well it happens a lot and sometimes this can be other people influencing us to do something that seems like a good idea at the time.

For example you may have a close friend that has decided that they want to climb Mount Everest. They put pressure on you to do this with them. You agree because you value their friendship but you do not really have any desire to start mountaineering.

You go to classes with your friend and soon lose interest. Your heart is not in it like theirs is. So what do you do? Well you may have to dream up some credible excuse why you cannot pursue this goal with them. Maybe lie about a physical problem that you have which prevents you from climbing mountains?

This kind of thing can be completely avoided when you have a clear and compelling WHY statement. You will have clarity about where you want to go with your life and there will be no need for you to be influenced by others.

It will be a lot easier for you to identify and set your goals when you have a powerful WHY statement. You will also be totally committed to achieving the goals because they are in line with your real purpose in life. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Let your WHY Statement guide your decision making

Without truly knowing what your purpose in life is it will be very easy for you to make the wrong life choices. You will be vulnerable to any temptations that come your way and to ride the wave of the “next big thing”.

Most decisions that you need to think about have consequences. People that drift along aimlessly in life rarely consider these consequences and as a result end up living a life that they don’t want.
When you have a powerful WHY statement as a guide you will make a lot better decisions in your life. It doesn’t matter how big or small the decisions are you can use your WHY statement to guide you down the right road.

Getting The Most From Your WHY Statement

There is no doubt that any good personal WHY statement takes time and effort to create. So having made this investment in your WHY statement you will want to get the most that you can from it.
Quite rightly you took quite a long time to write and refine your WHY statement so that it was as clear, concise and powerful as it could be. So now it is time for you to reap the benefits of your new powerful WHY statement and in this article we will show you how to do that.

          Motivate Yourself

Inspiration alone is usually never enough to achieve your goals. There are going to be times when you are not in the right frame of mind and just cannot be bothered to take action. When you have a strong personal WHY statement you can use it to provide you with a significant motivational boost.
We strongly recommend that you have a copy of your personal WHY statement by your bedside.

Every morning after you get out of bed you should read your WHY statement out loud so that it motivates you and gives you the energy that you need for the day ahead.

It is also a good idea to keep a copy of your WHY statement with you so that you can access it at any time. If you feel the need for a motivational boost at any time of day, and wherever you are, get out your WHY statement and read it again.

There is no limit to how many times you should read your WHY statement each day and be motivated by it. That is one of the main reasons that you spent all of the time and energy writing it so use it as often as you need.

          Set Your Goals

You are very unlikely to achieve goals that you are not truly committed to. Maybe you were persuaded by others to set certain goals in the past or you just thought that it was the right thing to do.

With a strong WHY statement you can forget about what others say and any other influencers. You know what your purpose in life is now and you have clearly defined this in your WHY statement. This clarity is essential for you to set goals that you are inspired by and truly committed to.

You are aware of the contribution that you want to make to the world and the impact that you want to have. So use this to set goals that will move you forward with both of these. Create your goals and plans around your personal WHY statement and you will be totally driven to achieve them.

          Make Decisions

You should find it easier to make decisions going forward now that you have a strong and clear WHY statement. Instead of making some decisions without considering the consequences as a lot of people do, your WHY statement will guide you to make the right decisions.

Your WHY statement has provided you with direction and purpose for your life so always have it in the back of your mind when you are making decisions. Ask yourself if making a particular decision will move you closer to your life s purpose or move you away from it.

The Best Way To Find Your WHY

There are a small percentage of the population that spend a great deal of time trying to identify their true purpose in life. This is agonizing for them and some will find their true WHY and others will not.

The reality is that some people just don’t care about their WHY. They are happy for life to control them and drift along day by day. But you need to find your WHY because it is important. Once you know your true reason for being then you can pursue this with passion and vigor to attain complete fulfillment.

Ways you can Find your WHY

Most people try to find their WHY using trial and error. They jump on every opportunity that they can to see if it leads to the Promised Land. This may work in a very small number of cases but will fail most of the time.

Another thing that you can do to try and find your WHY is to follow others. Maybe you have a friend or someone else that you are close to that you believe is a lot happier than you are and want to do the things that they do.

So you decide to set the same goals that they do in the hope that you will find the same results. The problem is that you are not going to be as committed to these goals as your friend is. When your heart isn’t really in something then there is not much chance of you achieving your goals.

Maybe you have seen something on the Internet. You see people are really happy with this so you decide to pursue it as well. But you need to bear in mind that most of this is marketing and that the people looking happy in the ads are being paid to do this. Please don’t believe everything that you see on TV or the Internet.

Finally you can decide to really find your true purpose in life. It is not going to be the easiest path for you to take but you know it is the right one. How To Write A Good WHY Statement

Once you have discovered your true calling in life you want to create a WHY statement around it. Your WHY statement needs to be compelling because you want to use it to motivate you every day to do the right things to attain fulfillment in your life.

There are a number of formats that you can use to write your WHY statement but at the end of the day it is up to you. There are no hard and fast rules here. The most important thing is that your WHY statement really resonates with you and that it is effective.

Four Elements of an Ideal WHY Statement

Although you don’t need to conform to any set rules there are four elements to a good WHY statement that we strongly recommend that you follow. Your WHY statement need to be very clear and as concise as possible for you and any people that you choose to share it with. So we strongly recommend that you include these 4 elements in your WHY statement:

          1. Make your WHY statement clear & simple
It’s important that your WHY statement provides clarity about your life’s purpose. It needs to be simple to understand and as concise as you can make it. At the end of the day it needs to make sense and resonate with you.
          2. Your WHY statement needs to guide action
Your WHY statement must inspire action. There is no point just writing it and then do nothing about it. It needs to inspire you to work towards your true calling in life and motivate you to work on this every day.
          3. Include your Contribution to others
If you can help others then you will help yourself. Every good WHY statement needs a contribution element to it so make sure that yours does as well. Having a contribution element will inspire you to move forward each day.
          4. Make your WHY statement positive and ensure it resonates with you
It will actually be pretty difficult for you to create a WHY statement that is negative but ensure that it is really positive. When you read your WHY statement it needs to resonate with you and motivate you to take action towards your life’s purpose.

How long should your WHY Statement be?

Again there are no strict rules to follow here. Your WHY statement needs to be as long as you need it to be. Having said that we recommend that you keep your WHY statement as short as you can.

The most important thing is that your WHY statement contains the 4 important elements that we discussed above. While others may be able to write their WHY statement in 1 sentence this may not be enough for you. This doesn’t matter at all so please do not worry about this.

Aim for an Evergreen WHY Statement

An evergreen WHY statement is one that you will not have to change very often, if at all. You want to use your WHY statement in all aspects of your life both in your work and personal life.

When you are writing your WHY statement, think about it as a way to express the value that you provide to others at work and in your personal life. There is no need for you to write two WHY statements to cover this.

What about a business WHY statement?

A WHY statement for a business is known as a “mission statement”. Having a good mission statement is important but most business owners don’t bother to create one. Or they write one and then never look at it again.

          • It provides direction — Your customers, employees, suppliers, and stakeholders will see how new products and services align with the direction that the company is heading and will be more committed to them.
          • It provides employee unification — When you have a strong mission statement and you share this with all parties it makes it easier for everybody working on the product launch project to see how they fit in and how important their role is.
          • It helps to maintain focus — When a company grows, bosses and workers can lose their focus. With a explicit mission statement in place it will provide guidance during periods of growth. The mission statement will remind everyone of the main goal and help to keep its reputation intact.
          • It creates accountability — Any business will exist to fulfill a specific purpose or need and this needs to be stated clearly. A business needs to be accountable so that it can continue to improve and serve its customers better. If the overall purpose of the business is unclear then it is going to be difficult, if not impossible, to make these improvements.
